“Confucius Says…”

1. Select 5 sayings and write a short explanation of them.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” This saying means if you pick something in life, which you love a lot, then when you have to do it you don’t mind. It is by choice as a posed to picking something just for the money or other reasons but you hate it and you hate everyday you have to do it.

“”Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” Typically being “beautiful” means the appearance of someone/thing, how they look but what people don’t see sometimes is the inner beauty of people. The inner beauty is much more meaningful than outer beauty but it is harder to see and some people choose not to see it.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” When you attempt any task in life it doesn’t matter if it takes you a day or ten years to complete it, just as long as you try your best and don’t give up.

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall” This saying is similar to the one above as they both are about never giving up. This one is saying it may be an achievement to not fail but its a greater achievement to fail and be able to get back up and keep trying till you succeed.

“He who knows all the answers has not been asked all the questions.” The world is filled with complex and powerful concepts which have not even been explored. So if a person thinks he knows everything then he is naive as he has not explored or been asked every question.

3.How many storylines could relate to confusian sayings? List films, television shows, novels, etc that could be related to these sayings.

-I love You Man (film)

-Looking for Alibrandi (novel and film)

-Da Vinci Code (Novel/movie)

-King’s Speech (movie)

– Mean Girls (movie)

-Beauty and the Beast (film/novel)

-The Social Network (movie)

-To Kill a Mocking Bird (Novel)

4. Write some Confucian saying of your own.

-Treat others as you would like to be treated

-People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones

-You can’t have you cake and eat it too

-When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

-The sun will come out tomorrow, with a new sun comes a fresh start

Confucius’ life:

-Which of his teachings became law?

-What is the link between Taoism, Buddhism and Confucian teachings?

-To which countries did his teachings travel first? How did they get there?
